What is a Promo Package?

For my coursework I am creating a Promo Package for an artist, also known as a press pack.
After researching promo packs, I found out what they were, and what they were used for. Promo packages are used by bands or artists to introduce them to the music industry, or to promote new projects the artist is working on. There are many people in the music industry who a band or artist may want to work with or use to promote their music, such as managers, the press, promoters etc, and by using a promo pack the band are able to send information about themselves and their material/project to all these people in a whole pack, rather than having to personally give information everyone. Promo packs are sent either online or through the mail. Promo packages always want to show off the artist, and put their best foot forward.

Things that are generally included in promo packs:

  • A short demo of the artist's music
  • A short biography
  • A photo of the band or artist (especially if the package is going to the press)
  • A collection of any press the artist has received
  • contact information of the artist
  • Anything else the artist deems important to add to the promo
Promo packages are mainly used by artists to promote their new upcoming projects - usually to promote the project to record labels and managers. Many artists use these for their new songs or albums they want to release.

When doing research about promo packs, I found this website which really helped me understand what they were, why artists used them and many of the items included.
